Nichole Cassidy, AMFT

My interest in becoming a therapist sparked while watching many of my family members suffer from addiction and other mental health issues. I knew I wanted to help guide, and provide a safe space to people suffering from similar experiences. Allowing such a space for understanding, validation, and empathy is crucial for meaningful connections, and as a therapist, my top priority is to ensure a client is being heard and has the freedom to use their voice to share their story without fear of judgement.

While obtaining my Bachelor degree in Psychology at California State University San Marcos, I worked with children who are diagnosed with ADHD and  Autism Spectrum Disorder as a private nanny.  During this time, I also explored my interest in the neuroscience and obtained experience working with children and adults at a clinic providing daily transcranial magnetic stimulation(TMS) treatment. While obtaining my Master’s degree in Psychology at University of Massachusetts Global,  I worked at a county funded outpatient program serving adults and older adults with mental health diagnoses such as Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This is where I learned to use my love of art as a therapeutic tool to foster a space for clients to creatively express their thoughts and emotions in a group setting. I also have knowledge and experience working with clients in a residential treatment facility for those struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and relational issues. Working in this setting has taught me concepts from a medical health care perspective of addiction and understanding of common psychotropic and anti-craving medications. Overall, I enjoy working with adults, families, couples and adolescents over the age of 12.

In a therapy session, I utilize techniques from a various modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing and Narrative Therapy. I have a strong desire to continue training on trauma work including Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I enjoy using creative modalities such as games, art and mindfulness practices while focusing on a client centered, collaborative approach.
